Not only sea

The land of the Malatesta or Malatesti
One of the most important historical regions of Italy, the lands of the Malatesta family, powerful Rulers that left their mark on history in the centuries between the Dark Ages and the Renaissance. This part of Romagna is characterized by rolling hills, cities, towns and villages, which conserve a rich artistic and cultural patrimony; crossed by two valleys, those of the Marecchia and the Conca rivers, with surprising countryside and panoramas. A land between the sea and the foothills, a place where hospitality is in the character of the people and where life is still sweet.

CORIANO Beautiful countryside with cultivated fields, plentiful with vineyards and olive groves, farmhouses and well preserved ancient villages. Some of the most bountiful agricultural countryside of the Malatesta Dominion, a land where people have lived well for centuries; the sea is nearby and small roads through the verdant hills lead directly to the ancient Republic of San Marino.

GEMMANO  here we find the most uncontaminated and surprising nature of the Dominion. The wild vegetation vies for space with the cultivated fields and small valleys hide true naturalistic treasures. And how can we not mention the evocative Onferno Caverns and the Natural Reserve that surround them: a patrimony of national importance.

MONDAINO  this fortified city was built on a high hill, where the fallow deer, or “daino”, once grazed and where a temple to Diana once stood; a stronghold of the Malatesta Dominion on the border with the lands of their rivals, the Montefeltros. Fortified walls and gates, an imposing fortress and the entire structure of the town bespeak its past which comes alive each year through a great historic commemoration.

MONTECOLOMBO Like all of the other Malatesta castles of the Valconca, this town is build on a rolling hill that dominates the course of the river and the plains below. The historical center has conserved many features of the fortified village, which today is still surrounded by verdant countryside.

MONTEFIORE CONCA is the medieval capital of the Valconca and one of the best conserved towns of the Malatesta Dominion. For this reason it is part of the prestigious national circuit of the "Borghi più belli d’Italia" (The most beautiful villages of Italy). Like a stone sentinel of the Malatesta Dominion, the Fortress with its severe and powerful geometric lines offers truly unique panoramic views. It rises on a promontory where, on a clear day you can see the coastline from Fano to Ravenna.

MONTEGRIDOLFO One of the castles that protected the borders of the Dominion with the Marche. A village wrapped in its walls, with a beautiful gate with towers that opens onto its harmonious historical center. A town that has been completely and carefully renovated with the idea of offering tourism and culture.

MONTESCUDO At the borders with the Republic of San Marino and next to the the Montefeltro territory, on a crest that opens the way to the first mountains of the Apennine range. Today, Montescudo is a strategic starting point for exploring the more internal areas of the Malatesta Dominion; the landscape is agricultural, the craft traditions continue to flourish and the wines and cuisine have taken on particular importance.

MORCIANO DI ROMAGNA  The modern capital of the Valle del Conca, a small city that marks the passage from the plains to the hills and which lived its golden age of development in the last one hundred years. The traditional San Gregorio Fair, one of the most important of Romagna, still marks this towns age old vocation for commerce.

SALUDECIO Between 1500 and 1800 Saludecio was the most important city in this part of the valley, as can be seen in the refined buildings and the little homes of the village which boast style which is noble but with a touch of folk. The entire historical center is rich in important works of art, and the small castles that dot its countryside bring to life ancient times.

SAN CLEMENTE The territory of San Clemente has the first hills facing the sea. Wine is the true prince of this land; San Clemente is recognized as a town that has always offered one of the best Sangiovese wines produced in Romagna.

SAN GIOVANNI IN MARIGNANO called "the granary of the Malatesta" thanks to its very fertile soil. The center of the town continues to be a testimony to its important past.

SANTARCANGELO DI ROMAGNA Santarcangelo is a lovely and important little city which has maintained strong ties with its past and with its traditions. The historical center is vibrant, with its houses and antique buildings, its many taverns and restaurants, a tangle of narrow streets and stairways that lead to small squares where people love to stop and chat.

MONTEBELLO Already in the III century B.C. the Romans understood the strategic importance of the “Mons Belli” and erected a lookout tower here. In the XV century the Counts Guidi of Bagno di Romagna succeeded the Malatesta family and a courtly residence was added to the fortress. The charm of the Castle is now tied to the timeless charm of the legend of Azzurrina.
